The United Kingdom Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a mandatory emission scheme based upon ‘cap and trade’ theory. The CRC is intended to force a reduction in CO2 for businesses not currently considered to fall within the Climate Change Agreements (CCA) or the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
The use of 'cap and trade' theory produces a price for carbon and therefore generates a clear high level financial and reputational incentive to reduce emissions. Approximately 5,000 organisations in the UK, including retail, finance, local and central government departments qualify for the scheme.
